Quick Interference Check – in Revit

Navisworks is the king of Interference checking – but it’s got a lot of bells and whistles that you have to overcome to get a handle on it. It is well worth the time to invest in learning to wield it’s power and usefulness – but when you need a quick check of your model, you can do it right inside Revit.

Here’s How:

First you need to make a list of the systems you want to check. Examples are: Structure against Plumbing, Ceilings against Structure, Ducts against Lighting fixtures, etc.

Once you decide on your categories, create 3D views that ISOLATE those categories. Basically, make a 3D view and name it something like: Ducts vs Lighting Fixtures. Then turn off everything but the ducts and the lighting fixtures (Using Visibility Graphics). See image above for example of this.

Then you can run an Interference Check on these two categories. Simply select Collaborate>Interference Check>Run Interference Check.

The two columns have a dropdown at the top for you to select the current model and a linked model (in this case – the mechanical model). Once the file is selected, you can then check the boxes for the specific items you want to check. (in this case the Lighting fixtures in the Current Model, and the ducts in the MEP model).

A separate dialog box appears after Revit runs the check, showing you the clashes. When you select a clash – it will highlight the two items in the 3D view.

You can zoom in and then better see what needs to be done to alleviate the clash.

Here below are a couple other examples. One is Stairs run against Structure showing that the rafters were not removed to make way for the attic stair. The second image is Structure run against Ceilings showing a large beam extending well below the intended corridor ceiling.
